Logistics and transport

With 1.7 km of roads per km2 and 1 850 km of motorways, Switzerland offers one of the most developed road networks in the world. Public transport by rail or by air is constantly brought up to date and new major roads are under construction to further improve the liaisons with the neighbouring countries.

There are no less than three international airports serving LAKE GENEVA REGION:

  • Geneva,
  • Basel,
  • Zurich.

The region moreover has about ten aerodromes equitably spread over the territory. The major ones are to be found at Fribourg, Lausanne, Payerne, Yverdon-les-Bains, Sion, Neuchâtel, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Bern and Porrentruy.

To reach these airports, the road and rail systems cross the seven cantons of LAKE GENEVA REGION and allow rapid access; hundreds of roads and thousands of km of railways, used notably by the European network of high-speed trains (TGV), also assure rapid and safe transfers.

On average, Swiss cities are less than two hours apart by train, often even less. One may also note that via the city of Basle and the Rhine, the link with Rotterdam and the oceans is easy for the conveyance of all the goods.

For the comfort of the enterprises that are present in the region, and particularly those that live on export, there are 150 « free ports ».

These zones that are close to borders are reserved for goods that transit through the country. They are not charged any entrance and exit customs tax and are open to all the trade parties. Goods can be stocked there, packed, detailed, labelled and forwarded. Formalities are limited to procedures TEI-90 and these zones offer numerous services like:

  • logistics advice,
  • import-export,
  • customs agency,
  • management and storage,
  • deposit,
  • maritime and air freight,
  • rail and road transport

The major ones are in Geneva, Bern, Lausanne, Chavornay, Vevey, Neuchâtel, Le Locle,  Martigny, Boncourt and Fribourg.
